Why SEO for pharma is different
SEO for pharma companies differs broadly from generic SEO advice, and operates very differently. Every piece of content passes through MLR review. Claims are restricted by regulation. Patient-facing and HCP properties serve audiences with fundamentally different search behaviours and legal constraints. And most programmes run across markets, each with its own country team, language, and local regulatory layer.
Search engines treat health content as YMYL, which raises the bar for expertise and trust signals at exactly the moment internal processes make fast iteration hardest. SEO in this environment is not a content hack. It is an operating discipline that has to survive review cycles, legal constraints, and organisational complexity.
That is the environment I work in.
What I do in pharma SEO engagements
I own the SEO process end to end, from roadmap to implementation, working directly with dev teams, country leads, and stakeholders across medical affairs, marketing, and digital.
SEO audits built for regulated sites
- Prioritised findings with clear implementation paths, scoped so recommendations survive MLR and legal review instead of dying in it.
SEO for multi-site ecosystems
- Pharma organisations run multiple sites under the same umbrella. Corporate, country selector, country sites, portfolio, investors, global, patient-facing, HCP, and individual brand sites often sit on near-identical domains and can end up competing for the same queries. I map the ecosystem, define which property owns which intent, and resolve the cannibalisation that happens at content and entity level, not just URL level.
HCP and gated content strategy
- Access, indexation, and visibility strategy for login-protected and gated HCP properties, where standard SEO playbooks do not apply.
Information architecture
- Patient-facing and HCP properties have fundamentally different search behaviours and require separate strategic treatment. I advise on structures that respect both audiences and both regulatory contexts.
International SEO
- Hreflang, multi-market coordination, and URL architecture across country sites, including the governance needed to keep local teams executing consistently.
SEO training and governance
- Training programmes and best practice repositories tailored to pharma teams, built so adoption sticks across markets and seniority levels. I also work at CMS and architecture level to make SEO execution frictionless, removing the friction points that cause country teams to deprioritise it.
Pre-review content checks
- I review content against SEO and regulatory requirements before it enters the formal approval cycle, flagging changes that would trigger MLR review. Less rework, shorter review rounds, faster content cycle.
Background in SEO for Life Sciencies
More than 2 years as the embedded SEO lead on a major EMEA engagement for a top-3 global pharmaceutical company, covering multiple markets and owning the full SEO roadmap across technical, content, and training workstreams. Before that, enterprise SEO and IT project delivery across large multinational environments.
I work equally with global and regional teams.
Who this is for
Digital and SEO leads at mid-to-large pharma and medtech companies who have the budget and mandate to improve organic performance, and need someone who understands the regulatory environment, can get internal teams aligned, and has been inside a pharma SEO operation before.
SEO CONSULTANCY IN PHARMA – FAQ
What does an engagement look like?
- It starts with an introductory call to understand your setup and objectives. From there we define the scope, timeline, and working model. Depending on your needs and the SEO work already in place, the engagement typically begins with an audit or a defined project, followed by ongoing advisory or implementation support. Training can be standalone or part of a broader engagement.
Can SEO work within MLR review?
- Yes, if it is planned for. The failure mode is treating SEO as post-hoc optimization of approved content. The working mode is building SEO requirements into briefs and templates before content enters review, so approved content is already search-ready.
Do you work with country teams or also global?
- Both, and the interface between them is usually where SEO programmes stall. A large part of my work is governance: making it clear who owns what, and making execution easy enough that local teams do not deprioritise it.
Do you cover AI search?
- Yes. Visibility in AI-generated answers follows from the same foundations: crawlable architecture, clear entity signals, and content that machines can attribute and trust. Regulated health content that is structured well is at an advantage here, not a disadvantage.
How do you handle conflicts of interest?
- I do not work simultaneously with directly competing brands in the same therapeutic area and market. Potential conflicts are disclosed before an engagement starts, and exclusivity terms can be agreed as part of the contract. All client work is covered by confidentiality agreements.
Can you meet enterprise procurement requirements?
- Yes. I operate through a registered company with full business insurance, including professional indemnity, and I will work with your procurement team to meet your onboarding requirements.
